35 Sport Coupe...Anyone Have One?

Postby PiRita2 » Wed Feb 15, 2012 7:38 am

Must say, by the appearance and review videos, the 35 SC looks like the boat to give me the itch to upgrade from our beloved 2860. Seems steep financially, but looks even better than my prior favorite the 3360 (35 Express). Anyone have one? Or perhaps gone through one at a boat show? I'd be interested to get other boaters' takes on the 35 Sport Coupe.
Thanks.

I have a 2007 3360... Walked through the 35SC at the Annapolis Boat Show and the factory tour in Orlando. Very nice boat. Biggest difference in the cabin is the foot of the berth that folds down behind the wrap around couch. Provides more sitting room but may be a bit of a PIA if you have to make the foot of the bed up each time you use it. The galley, electrical panel, head and mid cabin are practically identical. In the cockpit, they are very similar with the L-shaped seating and helm. I love the adjustable rear sunpad at the transom and wish mine had that. The windshield walkthru requires the sunroof to be open unless you are 2 ft tall.
Overall, equipped with the sterndrive joystick it's a pretty nice boat. No need to deal with the front canvas and Isenglass, but less of that wind in your hair feeling than a traditional express cruiser. I wish they had something in the SC between the 35 and the 42. It's a big jump to the 42 in more ways than one and I don't need two heads. We'll see if they squeeze another model in there.

The only negative I noted was the headroom in the cockpit area. At 6’ 3”, my head hits the front edge of the sunroof when open. The 35 Sport Coupe we took for a test run was very stable.

Well, that begs the question about comparing the 3360 and the 35 Sport Coupe. I'm 6'1.5" tall. Assuming money wasn't an issue (and maybe it's not for you) would you prefer to keep your 3360 or move up to the 35 SC? I can see getting $70k for my 2006-2860 with 130 hours and a custom aluminum i-beam trailer. I see 35 SCs going for $290k and 3360s going for less than half that. What do you think?

I like my 3360. They are basically the same platform and power, one with hardtop and windows and one without. I wish mine had that Eurostyle sunpad on the back. Personally, I wouldn't trade up to a 35SC from my 3360, since it's the same size boat that I have and I don't mind canvas. If money wasn't a concern and I was moving into the mid 35ft range from something smaller, then I'd get the SC. Being almost 6'2'' make sure you don't feel cramped, there is plenty of room under the canvas bimini on the 3360. With the heated cockpit option you might get several more weeks out of it at the end of the season up in Michigan...
Go with your gut when you look at each. Either way, you won't go wrong.

Kevin:

Thanks for your thoughtful comments.

I don't dislike canvas, I dislike eisenglass (sp?). Never thought a hardtop would make any sense for a guy who boats for the outdoor aspect instead of the motoryacht/houseboat effect. But this sliding roof 7+ feet wide and 4 or 5 feet deep makes that hard top much more attractive in addition to zero eisenglass.

I'd never order the cockpit AC, defeats the whole purpose for me.

The beautiful styling, opening hardtop, awesome convertible stern seating and the on-board electric grill really make the whole thing a real possibility for me. When I see low hours 3360s on the market at less than half the price, however, it really conflicts me. Tough choice. Definitely glad it is Regal producing these great products.

Thanks again.

Waiting to take delivery in a few weeks. Great for the family. We will be using it extensively for crusing the Eastern Seaboard so will let you know how it is. We wanted the hardtop as we extend our season in the NE.

Levitty,

Thanks! I'll look forward to your report on family usage. We are usually in 4/15 - 11/15 so more weather ready is better.

Excited for you. Enjoy.

I bought a 390 cruisers sport coupe and I can't tell you how nice it is to see a storm come up suddenly and not care about it. IN south fl. the cockpit air is a necessity in the summer time and for you northerners the heat cycle will allow you to comfortably use your boat as long as you like. Enclosed helms are great. I am sure that the 35 coupe owners will really enjoy the roof over their heads as well. If anyone wants a deal on an 06 3560 with new dps drives contact me

Went to the Toronto Boat Show few years ago and brought home a 2565. Went this year thinking to just use the tickets since Crates was nice enough to send them.....ended up with a 35 Sport Coupe. I refuse to go to any boat shows in the future. :)

Still haven't told the wife we own a new boat.....maybe she won't notice. Hope she can take a joke. Havent decided on our build date as of yet.

From the first time I saw the sport coupes I knew we would purchase that style of boat eventually. What really sold me on the 35 was how spacious it was below. I prefer the layout over the 42 Coupe.

Dallas:

Wow, not sure whether to congratulate you or contact funeral homes in your area to see when visitation might be. Hope the Admiral doesn't make you walk the plank.

I'm interested in understanding what made you decide to make the jump from the smallest window express (2565) to the 35 SC.

It's not hard to figure the appeal on size and beauty. Some of the features I mentioned above are huge things to me. What made the list of your big factors?

Thanks,
Jim

Well, It appears we'll be out of the country quite a bit this summer so I was probably going to keep the 2565 on land for 2012 anyway. Combine that with the flexibility of the build date for the new boat, a reasonable trade-in on the 2565, and an awesome price on the 35 SC I decided to take the leap.

So now I was able to get rid of the 2565 before it depreciated any further. I got full credit for the slip for 2012. I've secured the 2012 pricing regardless of when I take possession. I will eventually have a boat that I can park with ease....heck, I'm having trouble parking my honda civic for crying out loud.

Only negatives I see is:

1) Crates goes bankrupt, in which case i have in writing that my deposit is still guaranteed
2) Crates makes a bit of interest on my deposit
3) 35 SC pricing actually drops in the future, which I doubt but you never know
4) I might need a new wife

You missed one big one (selling factor for the wife)....

5/ purchased boat when Cdn $ vs USF was basically at par.....you are now protected from future currency fluctuations which normally is not in the Cdn $'s favour).

So true.

I might have to take suggestions when I'm ready to break the news to her. :)

She did allow me a buy my dream car a few years back. I'll have to start by telling her that the 35SC is my dream boat.

I have a request...leave me your...ummm...guts, yeah that's it, in your will.

Would you tell me via PM the pricing and trade details? I don't mean to be rude, but I am curious and eager to figure out the potential numbers on actual sale price and trade value offered by a Regal dealer on a Regal product in CDN or US. Our boat in pretty darn Bristol for an '06.

No need to fear when your sole purpose was to make the admiral more comfortable. I am sure you were perfectly fine with your beloved 2565. Out of concern for the Admiral, you ordered the hard top to protect her from the sun , wind and rain. Cockpit a/c and heat so you can cruise to dinner and not ruin her new hair do. It never ceases to amaze me what we captains wont do for our admirals.

That would be my story

Picked up the boat and have her settled in. It has been great so far. Easy to drive and the joystick makes docking a real breeze. Cabin is great. Very family friendly and not too crowded even when all 4 of us are below deck.

hello everyone
i have been looking also at this boat because of its coupe style. But wife feels that sitting at the dock with an enclosed cockpit in sunny days will be very very hot and would require turning on the ac to keep cool. She still favours the express cruiser with a hardtop but. i like to hear from owners of this boat how they feel about a coupe style versus the express version.

she compares the sport coupe boat with sunroof to a car with a sunroof in sunny days, sweaty and hot unless you turn ac on for air.
and she definitely doesnt want to turn ac on at dock. she says beats the purpose of being outdoors and enjoying the fresh outdoor air.
Would appreciate any thoughts. thanks

With the front window and the top open there seems to be really good circulation. When it was 85 in NY we were on the boat all day and it was very comfortable.

Thanks for the follow up report. Sounds like the 35 SC is working out the way you had hoped. Not sure I understand the "enclosed" cockpit comment above. The entire aft curtain zips out, the windshield opens and the hard top slides open...right? Seems very hard-top express like to me. Isn't it?

Glad to hear the cabin seating is roomy enough for 4 or more.
