Regal 4080 Air condition supporting 50 Htz power

Regal 4080 Air condition supporting 50 Htz power

Postby Ali » Thu Jul 29, 2010 7:39 am

I’m planning to purchase a Regal 4080 (2007) used boat from the state and ship it to my country Kuwait. the power in Kuwait is based on 230V/50Htz which means I need to convert the shore power from that to 120V... the issue is most converters will do that but they won’t convert the freq (60 to 50) which will result in 120V/50Htz....

Now, what electrical equipment will be affected by that? specially the air condition system, does it support 50 and 60 Htz frq? and what is the type of air conditioning (32,000 BTU 2 cycle) installed on the regal 4080 year 2007?
Also if any ideas regarding the right shore power converter...

appreciate the support...

Yes any mechanical type appliance like AC and pumps have to be the correct frequency. If you run a 60Hz unit on 50Hz it will be ruined. Frequency conversion systems are pretty complex.

Atlas makes worldwide power converters ShorPower, however they are large and heavy, and very expensive. There smallest unit is the SPM-27D and is only 3KW, which wouldn't be enough for a AC of that size, so you would have to jump into a ShorPower series and those start at 12KW ratings.

I am sure it would be cheaper to swap out all your mechanical system vs purchasing an Atlas. I doubt that you have enough room in a 4080 to put the system either, as its at least two racks worth of equipment.

Just off the top of my head, you would have to change out:
Battery Charger
A/C's
Raw water pumps (A/C's)
Microwave
Most pure electrical items should be fine with 50Hz but would have to check the power input ratings.

This is the reason behind ordering an international boat. The other thing would be to just run the genny when ever you need power. ;) Sorry there isn't better news. If the marina could supply the conversion equipment, however then that would limit you to that particular marina, and have to use the genny elsewhere.
Thanks, Chris

Some are dual voltage and htz. This is from the Dometic website
"Capacities (BTU/hr) 30,000
Voltages 115V or 208-230V @ 60Hz/1 Phase - 220-240V @ 50Hz/1 Phase
Reverse cycle cooling and heating Yes
Blower type High velocity, high-efficiency
Cabin Controls Elite, or Passport I/O"

So you might not be in that bad of shape, but it would take a bit of time and understanding to make sure everything is set up correctly. I would get the hull serial number to Regal and ask what would be required for conversion. I think they did a refit of Hanks boat and that makes me wonder if they can do this work for a price for you before it ships.

Just a thought.

Mike,

You sure are correct, huh.. would have thought two different models, as things aren't going to run quite the same. I am surprised that they do dual frequency on these.

Although I did check and the raw water pumps and there are three separate models and each are rated:

115/60/1
230/50-60/1
220/50/1

I assume that the 4080 is still a 120V boat, or do they have 240VAC single phase feeds for AC and pumps etc?
Thanks, Chris

Chris,

Yes most of the big stuff are dual voltage now days but there will be many items that are not dual rated. I think the gen can be set up to 50 htz as well. The voltage regulator might need to be changed.

On the genny you would have to slow the motor down as well, 3600 RPM = 60Hz and 3000 RPM = 50 Hz. That is the reason for my question on the compressor and fan motor on the A/C I guess they just derate the compressor some as its going to be going slower. On the Kohler gennys for instance the 5KW @ 60 Hz and only 4KW @ 50Hz. The 7.3KW vs 6KW on the larger unit. One of the other things too is that the Kawasaki FD501 engine is rated at 16HP at 3600 and only 13.8 HP at 3000.

I understand the dual voltage aspect pretty easy, but the dual frequency was a shocker with motors involved.
Thanks, Chris

well, im looking into both options right now, but it looks like i will go with replacing the parts rather than installing a converter... the cost for the converter (Ases system) is around $17,000 and thats only for one shore power input and as you all know regal 4080 has 2 shre power inputs which means i need two converters $34,000 :x :x :x

Chris I am gettng it used coz I cant afford a new one which means an international packej is not an option bro...

it would help if someone from Regal could guide me through, any one has a contact person in regal???
